“Point of Decision”

Veronika Dobers is a German artist. She studied at the University of Art and Design “Burg Giebichenstein” in Halle, East Germany, from 1972 – 1976. Since 1984 she is living and working in Bremen, Germany. From 2007-11 she maintained a studio in CAP-Y3 in Kobe.
Her works have been shown in Japan, Europe and USA. She has been the recipient of various grants and public commissions.

Veronika Dobers says: In my work I deal with elementary topics of human existence.
I find parallels between the forms of expression of nature and those of human thinking, which is also a part of nature. I work intuitively. If I feel that a form carries a high potential in itself, it can accompany my work very long. I like to work with the line whose precision forces a hardly tangible thought in a concrete form.

Besides drawings on paper, Dobers works primarily in the technique of Hinterglasmalerei (reverse oil painting on glass). She uses acrylic glass instead of glass plates, which is at once a picture background and a foreground layer. To the viewer, it is both a window into the world of the picture and a partition wall keeping away the events of the picture. This creates an unusual tension between proximity and remoteness, which is conductive to her artistic intensions.
A long recurring theme in her work is the conflict between utopia and nostalgia (go or stay, here or there). She is interested in the point between, the point of decision. The work with this title shows a man in a boat who starts his journey into the unknown, and he must decide on a direction.
The exhibition in Museum Haus Kasuya features paintings from the workgroups “thoughts” and “beyond the horizon” and a series of drawings.
