Kanji Wakae has started his career in late 60s and continuously exhibited works domestically and internationally. His works include conceptual photographic works challenging visual perception and installations featuring political, economical, and environmental issues, each of which is representative of respective era.

The present exhibition features nude, which has been a classic theme in paintings. Including skillful, daring citations from masterpieces of Cranach, Goya, Ingres, etc., Wakae’s new paintings have been created from his unique point of view.

Provided that pornography is a form of “nude”, “nude” is ubiquitous in the current society and might appear difficult to be featured as something special. While one might think “nude” is a quite outdated theme in the modern art, we can find significance in Wakae’s attempt to discover a new horizon by constructing works with “nude”.
